How to Price a Digital Product

Digital products have zero marginal cost — each extra sale costs you nothing to fulfill. This means pricing strategy is everything. Price too low and you commoditize your work; price too high and you lose volume.

Creation Cost = Hours × Desired Hourly Rate
Min Price = Creation Cost ÷ Expected Total Sales (Year 1)
Suggested Price = Min Price × 2–5× (value multiplier by type)
Monthly Revenue = Price × Monthly Sales
Platform Fees = Revenue × Fee %
Monthly Profit = Revenue − Platform Fees − Marketing Budget
Months to Recoup = Creation Cost ÷ Monthly Profit

Typical Price Ranges by Product Type

  • eBooks / Guides — $9–$47. Beginner-friendly impulse buy. Low friction.
  • Templates (Notion, Canva, Figma) — $15–$97. Higher perceived value for business use.
  • Presets / Filters — $15–$75 per pack. Photographers pay well for quality.
  • Printables / Planners — $3–$25. High volume, Etsy-friendly.
  • Software / Scripts / Tools — $29–$299. Highest willingness to pay — solves real problems.
  • Membership / Community — $9–$99/mo recurring. Best long-term revenue.
How do I price a digital product?
Don't price based on what it cost you to make — price based on the value it delivers. A Notion template that saves someone 5 hours/week is worth $50–$100, regardless of whether it took you 3 hours to build. Research competing products, pick a price in the middle of the market, and test. Most digital creators underprice by 2–3×. Run a 72-hour launch at a lower price to collect reviews, then raise it.
What's the best platform to sell digital products?
